CULTIVATING THE HABIT OF THANKSGIVING
Thanksgiving is a divine principle deeply woven into the fabric of Christian living. It is more than a casual or an occasional utterance of “thank you.” It is a deliberate and continuous acknowledgment of God’s goodness, mercy, and sovereignty. Thanksgiving expresses our trust in God's perfect plan, regardless of how situations appear. It reflects the heart of someone who understands that all blessings flow from God, whether seen or unseen, small or great.
The Bible emphasizes thanksgiving as a vital component of our relationship with God. From Genesis to Revelation, we see countless examples of individuals offering praise and gratitude to God in every season of life. The Apostle Paul, writing from prison, exhorts believers to "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks" 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NKJV). This instruction shows that thanksgiving is not circumstantial; it is a command and a lifestyle for believers.
THANKSGIVING MAGNIFIES GOD’S GOODNESS
Thanksgiving shifts our focus from our problems to God's faithfulness. It magnifies the Lord and reminds us that He is greater than any challenge we face. Psalm 69:30 (KJV)says, "I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify Him with thanksgiving." When we give thanks, we exalt God above our worries and concerns.
THANKSGIVING SUSTAINS HEALING
Thanksgiving is not only an act of worship but also a means of sustaining the blessings we receive from God. In Luke 17:11-19(KJV), Jesus healed ten lepers, but only one returned to give thanks. Jesus asked, "Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine?" Luke 17:17(KJV). To the one who returned, Jesus said, "Rise and go; your faith has made you whole" Luke 17:19 (KJV). This shows that gratitude can lead to complete wholeness, not just physical healing but emotional and spiritual restoration. Thanksgiving secures and perfects what God has begun in our lives.
THANKSGIVING FUELS FAITH AND TRUST
When we recall God’s past faithfulness, we are encouraged to trust Him for the future. Thanksgiving strengthens our faith by reminding us that if God has done it before, He can do it again. Psalm 77:11(NKJV) says, "I will remember the works of the Lord; surely I will remember Your wonders of old." Each moment of gratitude reinforces our confidence in God's unchanging nature.
Cultivating the habit of thanksgiving is achievable with these simple steps and dedication. Start by developing a daily thanksgiving routine—thank God in the morning for life, health, and guidance, and reflect on His provision and protection before you sleep, as Psalm 92:1-2(NKJV) says, "It is good to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; to declare Your lovingkindness in the morning and Your faithfulness every night”. Offer sacrifices of thanksgiving as a physical expression of gratitude, acknowledging God's goodness, even in difficult times, as seen in Psalm 50:14. Pastor Chris emphasizes this saying “There’s no thanksgiving without a thanksgiving offering”.
Additionally, celebrate and share your testimonies, as Hebrews 13:15(NIV) says, "Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess His name." Pastor Chris said, “Sharing your testimony is your first way of giving thanks to God”. Sharing your gratitude with others not only glorifies God but also encourages those around you to cultivate a thankful spirit.
Thanksgiving is a powerful spiritual tool that transforms our perspective and strengthens our relationship with God. It is not an occasional act but a daily discipline that brings joy, peace, and blessings. By cultivating the habit of thanksgiving, we align ourselves with God’s will, deepen our faith, and unlock the fullness of His grace in our lives. Let thanksgiving be more than words on your lips—let it be the posture of your heart. As Psalm 107:1(NKJV) declares, "Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever." May your life be a continual offering of gratitude, bringing glory to God and blessing to those around you.
